We ended the day in Port Clinton last night with a nice walk to a restaurant nearby. This mural depicts the history of this little city which serves as the portal to nearby Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island.
The day was so hot that cold refreshment was welcome as the air cooled and the sun dropped lower into the west.
Bill and Ellen, Sally and Gary relax while waiting for dinner to arrive.
First thing in the morning is a pit stop.... fill up gas, check oil, ready to roll.
Our route today is under 200 miles... west to Toledo, turn right, north to Frankenmuth.
When we arrived at the hotel in Frankenmuth there were members of a classic car group from Ontario who were touring toward a car show in Kalamazoo. This wonderful 1948 Chrysler Air Flow woody took everyone's eyes.
Our small group then headed down the main street to find lunch and check out the shops.
It was amazing how well the merchants and visitors bureau have worked together to make a unified approach to making their city well decorated and attractive. The flowers and plantings were magnificent and a tribute to good planning and good planting.
Some of the merchants really went out of the way to coordinate their plantings with their products.
Along the way down through the shops we met a chap who explained to us that John the Baptist and Winnie the Poo had the same middle name. Then he asked Betty Dawn if she wanted to see his "pride and joy". To which he pulled out a photo of a bottle of Pride Wax and Joy dish soap. His card identified him as Paddy Mulin, the Crazy Irishman. There is a character in every town isn't there?
We heard a German musical group playing, and there was dance floor in place and people dancing. So Pub Crawlers Charlie and Vickie, and Bruce and Betty Dawn took a turn.
After dinner we walked down to hear the Glockenspiel and see the story of the pied piper with animated figurines. See the show in this You Tube clip:
Frankenmuth is indeed an interesting stop on any tour.
We go further upstate tomorrow and get our first view of Lake Michigan... the second of the Great Lakes we will see on this trip.
