Today we are on the road. A 200 mile run from Marquette, Michigan to Bayfield, Wisconsin. We celebrate the beginning of our second week on the road.
With a Bayfield, WI arrival at noon central time we found the hotel rooms were not ready for us, so we drove to the downtown area and took the Ferry to Madeline Island, which everyone had told us was something interesting to do. The island is part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
Finding a parking place was difficult, in downtown Bayfield, but one local told us to come back in January, when parking was plentiful. He smiled when he said it so we knew he was joking. We found a spot about three blocks from the ferry and walked to the Ferry stand and off we went to Madeline Island.
The ride across the calm lake was short and nice... we found a perfect lunch of white fish, fries and coleslaw. Good stuff., but another deep fried meal. Diets begone! Then off to investigate the island. There were a couple of restaurants, an interesting museum, some shops and a very nice culenary store with gadgets for the kitchen and home there. I left my camera in the car so I don't have any pictures to show you. This photo of our small cluster was taken by Reg Hahn.
Meanwhile, back at the hotel the rest of the group started arriving, and set up the hospitality table. Missy McKenna photo.
When we finally got back to the motel, Reg changed the spark plugs on his car, Bruce touched up his fuel pump installation and many of us installed new screen covers for our radiators that Reg so kindly provided.
They tell us the bugs are plentiful on the roads from here, so the extra screen (window screen cut to fit the grill area, attached with tie-wraps) will keep them from fouling our radiators, which are quite exposed.
When we came back from the trip to the island, and a heavy and late lunch there, we decided to have a light dinner at the hotel. The lovely sitting area down by the lake side proved irresistible, so we gathered there and snacked until dark.
Tomorrow, we are off to Minnesota and another 200 miles in the wilderness. And rough roads we are warned. Ah, Minnesota!
