Pub Crawl Day 12: Marathon to Wawa, Ontario

After a day of rain and uncomfortable driving, arriving at Marathon, the gang settled into games and frivolity in the old restaurant area of the Travelodge.  The hosts there were very accommodating.

Games of "Left Right Center" and "Farkel" helped pass the time before the Chinese take out delivery dinner.

Morning brought cloudy skies and heavy dew.  Drivers were out early wiping down the cars getting ready for the days drive.

Here's Bill Kukuk drying out the ignition with a hair dryer.

By the way, gas in Canada is very expensive.  Here we see it is 1.42.9 per liter.  That translates to $5.40 American per gallon for regular.

Our route today takes us inland a bit, over rolling landscape and back to Lake Superior.   We skirt a couple of provincial parks and lots of amazing landscape.

There seemed to be a lot of motorcycles on the route today... but apparently that's true most days here during the summer.  A great ride, motorcycles or Morgans.

We stopped at White Lake Provincial Park for a look see.  Lots of forest area and a neat lake used for fishing and boating.

White Lake even has a small beach for swimming.

The drives through the forest were enchanting.

After spending 45 minutes going through White Lake Park to see the lake, this view was available from Route 17 a mile down the road.  If you look carefully you can see the beach way in the distance.

Winnie the Poo has a park in White River, commemorating the story.  Missy McKenna sent me this pic.

Perhaps best known as the birthplace of "Winnie the Pooh", White River holds an annual festival commemorating the bear cub who became the inspiration of author A.A. Milne. Here's the story:  http://www.whiteriver.ca/article/winnie-the-pooh-6.asp

Entering Wawa, (which means Goose in Indian), this neat sculpture greets people at the visitors center.  Notice the wood hauling truck passing by in the background.

Also is this commemorative stone honoring the gold miners of the era.

Here's another goose at Young's General Store in Wawa.

And a Moose.

Reg Hahn heard a funny noise in the front of his car... diagnosed as a failing wheel bearing.  A trip to a local garage and some hospitality allowed Reg to do the repair on the garages lift.

Meanwhile Bruce fixed his malfunctioning fan and Gary K did routine greasing of the finicky Morgan front suspension.

We worked hard to get everyone together for a moment to take a group photo.  Here you see all of the cars (9 of them) and their operators and crew at the front of the Wawa Inn, with goose ready to leave it's mark.  Al Marsh, in blue shirt on the left of the photo is joined by the hotel manager Linda Ouellette.

All around Wawa were these Gitche Goomee totem poles.

Again, thanks to those who have commented about our trip and this blog.  Each email has been passed along verbally to the participants to whom they were directed.

Write to mogpls8@gmail.com if you wish to cheer us on.

Tomorrow to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and a crossing back into the USA.
