Morgan Pub Crawl Day 9: Bayfield, WS to Grand Marais, MN

Day 9... started with cloudy skies and dusty cars.

Early in the morning I went down to the car to clean and organize it a bit, and gained a friend.  She came over and jumped up on the tonneau and laid down.  But the time I ran back to the room to get the camera she was bored and started to wander off.  Nice start to the day.

Greunke's First Street Inn had a sign that they were serving breakfast.  So we stopped in for a quick bite of oatmeal.  This establishment in downtown Bayfield has been serving meals and renting rooms since 1940. Known as the best breakfast in town.  We needed to meet the rest of the gang for an 8am departure and didn't have time for the full breakfast, but several local residents were having a great time.

Back at the Fairfield Inn the gang was gathering and revving their engines.  Al Marsh provided this photo of the lovely gardens of this well manicured and very friendly Inn.

Our route today takes us the rest of the way around the peninsula for a scenic drive along the south shore of Lake Superior, to Duluth and then northeast up the far western shore of the lake.

The skies threatened rain, but aside from a few drops we didn't need to stop and put the top up on our car.  Several others keep their tops up nearly all the time for protection from the sun.

Just a few miles up the road those who had not yet had breakfast (most of the group) stopped in Cornucopia, WI at this interesting bar and grill called Fish Lipps.

The menu listed many breakfasts, and everyone said it was the best breakfast we had had on the trip thus far.  It was very good.

Our cars, parked on the street in front of the restaurant drew attention from passersby.  Here little Kyle gets his first taste of being in a Morgan.  We talk about "perma-smiles" and he had one.

Further up the road our odometer displayed our zip code.

Around the bend of Lake Superior we entered Minnesota and Duluth simultaneously.

We found the waterfront with a convention center doing a Dog Show this week.  Here Al points out the lake.

The S.S. William Irwin is on display as a museum of the iron ore history of this important port.  Some say we won WWII because of the iron ore shipped from here.

The Kukuk's found this interesting lighthouse.

and Gooseberry Falls.

Bill Kukuk took this lovely view of the lake's western end.

Social hour as the day ends.  Several of the Pub Crawlers relaxed on the deck with the lake lapping close by.

This is the view from our lakefront room at the Inn where we are staying.  Incredible!

Tomorrow, we go further up the coast and enter Canada.  We'll go to Thunder Bay to spend much of the day, then travel on to Nipigon, Ontario for the night.  We are told there is not much to do in Nipigon, so we'll spend our play time in TB, which looks like a happening place.

PS:

This car was in the hotel parking lot and it featured a very interesting trunk latch.  I wonder if Detroit will improve on it over time.

  1. Great blog, Gary! We in Texas hope that Art and Patsy aren't suffering from Barbecue Famine.
